Why No Product?

When I started my dreadlocks in 2006, I knew nothing about dreads and the way they formed.
Like many, I googled "dreadlocks" checked out some of the leading companies that sold product for dreadlocks, bought what they recommended and started my dreads. The article on Dreadlock Truth entitled Why Not Wax? highlights some common experiences myself and the author have had with dreadlock wax, such as:
  • "The wax gave the appearance of instant dreads"
  • "[The] waxy dreads started to collect dust, lint and debris, and the wax made it very difficult to wash that stuff out"
  • Wax repels water and traps the water inside the dreads.
  • Since wax repels water, it is almost impossible to wash out.
I cut the waxy parts off of my dreads in January of 2007, and have never since recommended wax to anyone.
